Rethinking paired-catchment studies: Should we be replicating our controls?

Key Points:
 Paired-catchment studies are seldom replicated making it difficult to determine a minimum detectable effect size (MDES)
 We used bootstrapped sampling to make hundreds-of-thousands of reference-by reference comparisons (RxR) with a paired-catchment approach
 95% confidence intervals from the frequency distribution of RxR comparisons estimated the MDES resulting from errors and random effects
